The early years of the city of Chartres and its cathedral are intertwined with myth and legend. There is little information about Chartres and the cathedral before the seventh century AD.
[L3 201 / The Druids] seem to have had an important center in the area, which was situated in the territory of the [G 06 / Carnutes]. There are several remaining rings of standing stones near Chartres, which are also linked to the Druids. However, legends point to Chartres as the most important religious center of Druidism. If this is the case - that it was the most important sacred center of the Druid religion - then it is possible that the area has been a religious site for hundreds, if not thousands of years before the coming of Christianity and the building of the first Christian church.
